Did you know we have a published author within our class ranks?

Mark Lewis has written two books, When Are We? and its sequel Looking Both Directions, both published in 2010.  When Are We? tells the story of two high school seniors, Mark and Gary, who set off for Florida on Spring break.  What follows is a trip unlike any they thought they'd have.  The sequel, Looking Both Directions, finds our two characters traveling across space and time to foil a plot most evil.

Both books are available for purchase on Amazon.com by clicking on the links below.

Show your support for Speedway Athletics by purchasing these custom-designed face masks.  Each mask is only $10.  Choose from two distinct designs:  streak or banded.  Best hurry because these won't last long as a limited number are being hand sewn by small Ethiopian children.

To order your mask, email Dan Maple, Speedway Jr. High Athletics Director, at: dmaple@speedwayschools.org

Another SHS reunion has come and gone and oh what a time we had!

My thanks and gratitude to the following classmates who graciously donated items for Saturday night's raffle.  Without you, it wouldn't have been a success:

  • Laura King
  • Caroline Kaiser Metzger
  • Jim 'Limpy' Clark
  • Mike Hall
  • Debbie Horneffer Elsey
  • Annette Pieper Stone
  • Jennifer Tooker

Thanks too, to McGilvery's Pub & Eatery, Big Woods and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for their contributions.

Special thanks go out to Lynn Henderson Gayle for creating the table centerpieces and to Laura King and Caroline Kaiser Metzger for organizing the raffle.   You ladies were terrific at what you did!

Also, thank you to the classmates who showed up early Saturday night and instantly pitched in to help set up our banquet room.  I stood back and watched you all.  It was just like old times.  Denise 'Kenny' Albrecht, Lisa Geiger Bray, Lynn, Kathy Cassetty, Don Lash, Greg Cox...you were amazing!

And I would be remiss if I did not thank all those who attended Friday night's mixer and 'welcome back' bash at McGilvery's Pub and our dinner on Saturday night at 1911 Grill.  Amongst the familiar faces were several classmates from so many years ago who showed up, surprising us all:  Paul Tingle, Wendy Pierce Langebartels, Doug Schaffer, Michelle Williams Blystone, Gerry Euliss, Nancy Bourke Raub, Tom Owens, Delaine Derbyshire Warriner, Rocky Crouch, Sally Endres Burnell, Ritch Jordan, Cindy Wilhoite, Rick Wiggam, Connie Albright, Bryan Patterson and John Butterworth, to name a few. Scott 'Cyber' Eiler transfixed us all with a live version of 'Mack the Knife' (a.k.a. The Shark Bites), Laura King looked radiant in her self-made metro lights dress, Beth Sneyd Nickels showed us you can beat cancer and come out of it looking stunning, Elizabeth Warren (not that one!) was able to join us from 1,800 miles away by the miracle of FaceTime, Scott Golden called in late Saturday night to say 'hello',  Jim Clark continues to humble us all with his commitment and drive in helping those who others see as 'lost causes' and has passed his inspiring traits on to his 9-year-old son Liam,  I finally learned who threw the firecracker during the indoor pep rally (my respect and admiration for Richard Feeley has skyrocketed), Tim Lee understood the meaning of  'casual chic' attire and Stephen Hollenbeck wore beaded slippers that put Dorothy's red-sequined shoes to shame.

Finally, a huge thanks to my co-host and chair, Tim Niemann, whose insane wit and banter kept me going through all the planning and organizing.  You sir, are a delight to be around and work with.  Your instant recall of things from long past is uncanny, you know everyone in town, and you keep me laughing.  I couldn't ask for a better sidekick.

I look back on it all and ask, 'was it not amazing?'

Until we meet again...

Thom Cook

Hello Sparkplug!

If you have photographs from our recent 40-year class reunion as well as photos from prior-year reunion events and would like to share them on our class website, please forward them to either Tim Niemann or myself at cook_thom@hotmail.com or tniemann4@gmail.com  We'll make sure they get posted.  Better yet, you can now upload pictures to our reunion photo gallery.  Be sure to identify who is in each photo, just in case we are unable to recognize the subjects. Once your photos are reviewed and OK'd, they will be published.

Photos from this past weekend are trickling in.  Some have been posted on our site.  Log in to http://www.sparkplugs1979.com and click on 'Reunion Photos' in the left side bar.  Hover your cursor over each photo to read the caption.

Hiya Sparkplug!

Just a brief note to let you know that the following domain names have been purchased:

  • SpeedwaySparkplugs.net
  • SpeedwaySparkplugs.info
  • SpeedwaySparkplugs.org

When typed in to an address bar, the above domains redirect to our class site, Sparkplugs1979.com.

You may be interested to know that SpeedwaySparkplugs.com is currently owned by a Minnesota-based company that specializes in K-12 school names and mascots.  SpeedwaySparkplugs.edu appears to be owned by the same company as well.
