In Memoriam

David Klencke (Young)

David Klencke (Young)

David Lee Klencke Young, 53, of Boulder, CO died unexpectedly in Los Angeles, CA on Saturday, December 27, 2014.

David was born in Indianapolis, Indiana to Phillips Leroy Klencke and Julia Ann Klencke. After graduating from Speedway High School in 1979, he completed a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Phi Beta Kappa, and a Master's degree in Computer Science at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

David moved to Colorado in 1985. He rapidly became a respected and valued member of the software development community. He held senior positions in numerous software start-ups with a career that spanned decades. He was prized as much for his leadership abilities as his considerable technical prowess. Although he wanted to code, everyone else wanted him to lead. There are many in the area who can attribute a great part of their success in the field to his mentoring and the example of his tremendous work ethic. His voracious curiosity and consequent knowledge was legendary.

David was an avid swimmer, skier, cyclist, driver and reader. He was intense, deep and solid. He was passionate about the environment and social justice. He was a scientist and fascinated by history. His tastes in music were broad and eclectic. He loved to cook. More than anything, he cherished his wife, Sue Young, and his son, Trent, and their life together. He had found his place as a husband and father, and was even more successful at that than he was in his professional life.

In addition to his wife and son, David is survived by his mother, Julia Klencke of Indianapolis and sisters Barbara Klencke of San Francisco and Cynthia Larmore. He was preceded in death by his father, Phillips Klencke. Visitation will be at Crist Mortuary from 4-7pm, Friday, January 9th. A memorial service will be held at Unity Church, 2855 Folsom, Boulder, CO at 1pm on Saturday, January 10th. Donations may be made to the David Klencke Young Memorial Trust to benefit Trent Young.
